Why Bobby Lashley isn’t getting over as a good guy in WWE?

WWE misses the mark from time to time on creating solid hero characters. I do not think this is what happened with Ronda Rousey… However, with characters like Roman Reigns & Bobby Lashley you can see that WWE does not know what they are doing. Why isn’t Lashley getting cheered? Look at these cringe-worthy story points. 3

  1. Bobby Lashley was managed by President Trump in the battle of the billionaires– You want to become a lifetime wrestling heel, be managed by the most despised president past 2010. My family remembers’s when Wendi Richter was managed by Cyndi Lauper. That establishes a hero. Want to become a villain? Be managed by the leader of the Republican Party. Plus the Mr. McMahon vs Donald Trump story is a waste of time without any of the old dudes actually wrestling.
  2. Lashley’s character was a bully in Global Wrestling & the Indie scene – For WWE to make Lashley a good guy. They have to exceed years of Lashley being established as a villain who beats up X-Division & Cruiserweight wrestlers. Like much of what I remember Lashley for is beating up Eddie Edwards. How is that going to get him over?
  3. He is missing the third dimension – This is more intangible but considers this… Every time Lashley seems to get a run in WWE his character seems to flatten out. Kind of like they don’t really know what to do with him. He was United States Champion and I still didn’t know who he was. The coolest angle I remember from his first WWE run was actually the Lashley vs Cena angle. That just had a big fight feel to it. I think if they want to get Lashley over, he has to skip the line and you need to start fueding him with Brock Lesner. Fans already know that is why Lashley is there anyway.

Believe it or not I actually like Lashley. I am just not insane, he does not meet the formula of a good character at the moment. That does not mean hope is lost. Maybe if you put him on a heel run or throw him in a feud with Brock Lesner, he can get to that next level. Just if I am a writer I am not exploring the Lashley & Strowman tag team for very much longer. There is nothing there chemistry wise. It is just two big men, “meh” typical WWE team.

Book Club review: Crazy is My Super Power!

Crazy is my Super power review

I read this book to learn about AJ Lee’s struggle with bipolar disorder, learn about her life as a wrestler and the challenges of a female wrestler. This book covers her journey from a child in a low income area to her journey in to adulthood. The themes I have noticed in this book are women being reduced to sex objects in the workplace and in athletics, finding success well struggling with a mental illness & following your dreams against the common perceptions.

AJ Lee as champion
“To me I wasn’t playing crazy, I was discovering my superpower” AJ Mendez Brooks

Everyone pictures wrestlers as these 6 foot five gods or these sex symbols in the case of women. Never the less they are expected to be the exaggerated perfect media images of men & women. AJ Lee was an incredible wrestler without being too overly sexualized, glamorized or put in a atypical box for women in wrestling. She is 5 ft 2 and could kick your head off & keep you entertained without being what you would expect.

I think her dedication and spontaneous behavior is part of what made her such a special wrestler to me. In 2010 to 2015 when I followed her career I was living with my brother on & off when we watched her on the TV we were always entertained. Although it is not a detraction from the story I would of loved to hear AJ Lee talk about working with Vickie Guererro. Just because they are both highly influential Hispanic women in the WWE Universe and their television rivalry was tremendously entertaining from rivaling valets to an actual gimmick match. Me and my brother were hooked to this rivalry.

Should you buy this book? If AJ Lee was as captivating to you as she was to me, absolutely. If you are not a wrestling fan, I am sorry to say this is not the book for you. Yes the story is mainly appealing if you remember the key moments of AJ’s career the way we do. From her being in Natalya’s stable, to the boyfriend drama, to the excitement of her valet story and becoming a multiple time champion!
