What are my issues with the SSF at Seneca College in 2018? 


Seneca’s Student Federation is not perfect. That goes without saying, they are sloppy, under involved and don’t factor in how to be a proper student federation at what should be a high quality college. Why am I so frustrated with the federation? Well below are my reasons of frustration with them. 

  1. They would not appear on the blog or podcast – There is no reason you can’t be interviewed on my show. Explain your position and connect with more Seneca College students then you would with your direct marketing campaigns. 
  2. They are ignorant to our issues – Students are legitimately confused and frustrated at Seneca. What groups can I fit in to? Where can I make similar minded friends? Are there events I would like? Seneca Student Federation does not clearly address any of these issues at this time. 
  3. They do not promote their events on high traffic webspace –  I get more web traffic from Seneca College students then this stupid little group gets on their black board. Or their SSF website updated last month. Why is their website low traffic? The blog is rarely updated, they lack an integrated communications approach and there is no interactive space. This website is just boring. According to hubspot they are not using meta descriptions which also plays a part in them generating a low traffic information website. Meta tags and descriptions should help organically index a website in search engines. 
  4. The comedy event was homophobic – Don’t ignore this. You brought people in to the school that harassed Seneca Pride members. We do not feel welcome at your events. What is going to be done about this? 
  5. The website is not user friendly – You do not need an account to comment on my blog. You need an account to use anything on their blog. Who needs another Seneca College account?

These can help make you a subject matter expert, allow you to flaunt your high conversational skills and discuss important topics. In the past me and my closest friends have used podcasts as a tool for comedy, pretending to have a radio show and communicating with other players’ of video games.

Situation # 1: In 2015 I was the social media executive for Kingston Pride. 

Obstacle: With Kingston Pride I worked with a committee that did not assign a marketing budget, had a poor relationship with local press and did not have a customer data base. 

Solution: I set up a Facebook page to begin managing relationships with the community, promote events & keep track of interactions. Before I was in the door they did not even have a search engine index strategy. They thought a static page would index them. As a result they lost their consumers to independently hosted lgbt+ events.

Situation # 2: In 2016 I created the Seneca Pride website. 

Obstacle: Seneca College actually had some search engine association with a rather violent hate crime in 2011. We wanted to change the Seneca College association and LGBT+ presence in 2018. It is not that we want to ignore the crime. It is that we want a positive image for Seneca LGBT+ students. 

Solution: I created info-graphics, event promotion posts & content around the group which pushed the bad content down in the search engine.

Situation # 3: In 2018 I started volunteering for the Ontario Liberal Party. 

Obstacle: There has been growing popularity to the opposition party’s campaign.

Solution: I work to persuade votes, create content to back my standing and continue to advocate for the incumbent government. what this really proves is my loyalty. The Liberals may not win in 2018 but I dedicated my time to make an impact with them.

Hello I am Ashton Deroy, I am a digital marketer, customer service person and content creator.  (For a third person written description please refer to my about me section.)

In 2014 I completed my diploma in creative advertising and in 2015 I completed my graduate certificate in Interactive marketing. I have been in many roles over my career which have lead to life lessons I take with me everywhere. My key experience to forming my career path was in 2013 when I was a customer service representative at Convergys for the Rogers Communications client.From here I was able to see a front row to industry trends in media, learn how to work the company’s invoice system and predict the decline of cable TV. I’ve also worked in telemarketing and tech support.  

My biggest strengths can be narrowed down to three key areas. Customer service, customer retention and sales. The uniqueness about working primarily in telecom is I have dealt with some of the most complicated user experience issues in mobile services, printing & cable. The combination of working in these three areas have turned me in to a very effective communicator. While supporting email systems inside a company, I actually learned to set up my own email systems. That was around the time I started focusing on creating a website support business.

I want to work in a communications role on the telephone, for a political party, tech company or finance company. I think I can be a major asset and a problem solver. I aim to have a life centered on the pursuit of career. Not the pursuit of a personal life.

Hello Readers,

Thank you for checking out my website for the new ePortfolio format. This will be my 1 millionth ePortfolio. I drastically embellish of course… That is really what marketing is all about. Despite what this book says about telling authentic stories, I would say the author himself is not a very authentic person. 

“All Marketers really are embellishers.” Do you want proof? As an online reader, you have probably never heard of Seth Godin until coming across my blog here today. Go read how the man describes himself in his own website bio. Then the slams I am about to have on this man’s book will make a lot more sense. Conceded and exaggerated self-importance really comes to mind.

Today I am reviewing Seth Godin’s All Marketers are Liars Story Tellers.

A book somehow described as an “Underground Classic”. I have a new quote for it, A waste of time. The Seneca College professors I know could publish something more interesting based on working in media sales, Beer marketing or even political advertising. This is an awful book.

Okay, so I obviously can not just sit here defaming an author without explaining why I did not like this book and I only gave it 2 stars on Google Play. Let me break down why this book was not a great or useful to the target reader. Who is the target reader? People working in or aspiring to careers in Marketing. That is your key target. 

  1. What is wrong with the book? The book offers already existing worldviews and nothing new. It is not motivational and it is not authoritative. If I didn’t read his bio I would think he was an amateur writer with no subject matter expertise. 
  2. The book doesn’t frame the collected works as a story. They just frame it as collected work. How are they talking about storytelling without telling a great story?
  3. What do we want from a marketing book? We want motivation, we want excitement. We want the keys to great campaigns and rich people. 
  4. The best points of this book can be summarized in under 1000 words. How did he extend it into 130-200 pages? Page 32 Ebook he uses media as an example instead of personal storytelling examples. “Seth Godin please, personalize your own spin on things. “
  5. Just get to the point, tell your story & get out – Points of reading this book were inconclusive and annoying. If I wasn’t dead set on reading it before the end of the semester. I would of put it down and never picked it up again. For example, page 30 of the Ebook, discusses glimpses of a Worldviews. “All car salesmen are liars.”Seth Godin. We know this, let it go. Do not by any means put it in a book. There are a bunch more quotes like that, that wasn’t worth the 1.5 cents of ink to the page.

Key Takeaways from Seth Godin’s book, with my own spin on them:

  1. Their worldview and frames got there before you did -Basically yeah people decided their consumption preferences, religion, and perception of reality before you came in contact with them. The easiest thing for marketers to do is change small perceptions, not entire life images. 
  2. People notice only the new and then make a guess- As someone who promoted independently published persons. If your book is not a best seller in the first month on the market. It won’t make that kind of impact at all. I know this from working with authors who make the mistake of not making an Advertising and Public Relations budget for the release of their book. They don’t market the story so the book grows outdated and unpopular too fast. GoodReads hardly sells books!
  3. First impressions start the story – A Cliche you might have heard from an employment center about job interviews 5-10 times already. Yes, people decide whether to buy or hire you based on the first meeting. 
  4. Great marketers tell stories we believeSarcasm “However greater marketers don’t get you charged under the competition act for false advertising and unproven claims!” This is why Seth Godin’s book does focus on authenticity as a key selling benefit.  

Questions you could ask yourself before creating online content: 

These are questions featured at the end of Seth Godin’s book, all Marketers are Liars Story Tellers.

“Which worldview are you addressing?

Which frame are you using?

What’s the story worth noticing?

How will you live your story?

What hard decisions are you willing to make in order to keep your story real and pure and authentic? (Compromise is the enemy of authenticity.) “

Conclusion

I love to read a book that is useful, teaches me something or tells a great story. This book did none of these things. I would say this book targets people in marketing looking to make their own stories, but how can I say that about an author in Seth Godin who does not tell his own story? Instead of saying that I will say it the best way I can, do not purchase this book at all.

Significant events: Start of the show we read a letter about a crazy Social Justice Warrior who is stressing her boyfriend out. 12 minutes in Diana deals with her mom interrupting work. 15 minutes in Diana refer’s Mike Harrison’s reign on indiscriminate and under strategic cuts. 22 minutes Diana says if you kill animals in another country, it doesn’t make you okay to the markets where you are cruelty-free. 33 minutes in we talk about how we can’t progress when people are still viewing the police as one-dimensional prejudice people with guns. 39 minutes we talk about how Sears wasted money and how student accountants need to learn to communicate and serve others.  

Ashton Deroy: In my opinion significant others who have drastic identity changes that randomly cause stress in your recreation or family events. It is time to say goodbye! There is a difference between fighting oppression and being obnoxious. People who tend to jump around identities tend to do it more than once and cause multiple stresses. As far as Doug Ford goes, I am more likely to support the incumbent than someone who makes cuts that only hurt the bottom earners in the population. 

Diana Skye: If your significant other does not respect you, it’s time to let them go. You deserve much better. As for Ontario politics, people really need to think about what they want. Doug Ford may be saying all the right things, but whether he will do them as premier is another story.

Hello readers & Facebook friends,

Everyone knows that with my partnership with a Texas on Demand Radio channel & my love for radio. That I would like to have my own web based audio talk show. That is my goal to have an interesting hobby. To pursuit that dream I joined the Seneca College Newnham Campus Podcast Club.

These are three things I learned from my quick meeting with the podcasters:

  1. Mostly a men’s club – Some female members would actually be great. Mostly this club is dominated by men, which is a nice.
  2. Story telling using sound – Podcaster even at my level are creating art work with their audio files. This is something I have to get in to and I am getting my training in audacity as a result of being in this club.
  3. Joe Rogan is an a******, with a well done podcast – I will never not say this about Joe Rogan. He is an A****** ! He condemned Fallon Fox as a transgender female fighter. I will never like Joe Rogan. That just is what it is. His podcast however is a great use of his talents as an entertainer and audio talk personality.

Join me at the Podcast club meeting next Monday. I will probably pop in late but it is a lot of fun and a lot of extra learning.

Book Club review: Crazy is My Super Power!

Crazy is my Super power review

I read this book to learn about AJ Lee’s struggle with bipolar disorder, learn about her life as a wrestler and the challenges of a female wrestler. This book covers her journey from a child in a low income area to her journey in to adulthood. The themes I have noticed in this book are women being reduced to sex objects in the workplace and in athletics, finding success well struggling with a mental illness & following your dreams against the common perceptions.

Everyone pictures wrestlers as these 6 foot five gods or these sex symbols in the case of women. Never the less they are expected to be the exaggerated perfect media images of men & women. AJ Lee was an incredible wrestler without being too overly sexualized, glamorized or put in a atypical box for women in wrestling. She is 5 ft 2 and could kick your head off & keep you entertained without being what you would expect. 

I think her dedication and spontaneous behavior is part of what made her such a special wrestler to me. In 2010 to 2015 when I followed her career I was living with my brother on & off when we watched her on the TV we were always entertained. Although it is not a detraction from the story I would of loved to hear AJ Lee talk about working with Vickie Guererro. Just because they are both highly influential Hispanic women in the WWE Universe and their television rivalry was tremendously entertaining from rivaling valets to an actual gimmick match. Me and my brother were hooked to this rivalry. 

Should you buy this book? If AJ Lee was as captivating to you as she was to me, absolutely. If you are not a wrestling fan, I am sorry to say this is not the book for you. Yes the story is mainly appealing if you remember the key moments of AJ’s career the way we do. From her being in Natalya’s stable, to the boyfriend drama, to the excitement of her valet story and becoming a multiple time champion!
